Portmellon is a small coastal village on Mevagissey Bay, a short walk south of Mevagissey. The road runs along the water on the sea wall, the beach is small and mostly goes under at high tide, and the village has the unhurried air of a place that knows exactly how big it wants to be.
The water
The bay is sheltered by the shape of the coast, and Portmellon has always lived from the sea in a modest way: boats, crab pots, a beach that comes and goes with the tide. At low water there is sand and rockpooling; at high water the sea is against the wall, and the village lets it be.
On foot
The village sits on the coast path between Mevagissey and Gorran Haven, which makes it a natural pause rather than a destination: a bench, a view across the bay, and the walk onward in either direction.
