Minack Theatre

Gwariva Veynek

The Minack is an open-air theatre carved into the cliff above a gully at Porthcurno, four miles from Land's End, with the Atlantic behind the stage. In Kernewek it is Gwariva Veynek, the theatre abounding in stones, which is exactly what it is.

Rowena Cade

The theatre was created by Rowena Cade, who bought the land at Minack Point for £100 and built the theatre above the gully over the decades that followed. The first production, The Tempest, was staged in 1932, and the sea has been part of the audience ever since.

The theatre since

The season runs from Easter to the end of October. The first dressing rooms were built in 1955, and the theatre has been a charitable trust since 1976. Rowena Cade died in 1983, shortly before her 90th birthday. Love Story was filmed here in 1944, and the theatre's 90th anniversary was marked by The Tempest in August 2022.
