Geevor Tin Mine stands between Pendeen and Trewellard in west Cornwall. In Kernewek it is Hwel an Gever, the mine of the goats. It worked from 1911 until 1990, and the site is now a museum and heritage centre where the buildings, the machinery and the tunnels still stand.
Down the shaft
Victory shaft drops about 540 metres, and it was named to mark the end of the First World War. About 50,000 tons of black tin came out of Geevor, and over 85 miles of tunnels were driven from it. The mine closed in 1990 after the International Tin Council failure of 1985, and the pumps were switched off in May 1991.
Today
Part of the World Heritage Site since 2006, Geevor is a museum and heritage centre over 67 acres, with underground tours into Wheal Mexico, where visitors can go into the rock the miners worked.
