Hayle

Heyl

Hayle is a port town at the mouth of the Hayle river, where it meets St Ives Bay across miles of sand. In Kernewek it is Heyl, estuary, which names its whole reason for being. The town grew from three settlements, Foundry, Copperhouse and the Towans, and its working life was made of engines.

Engines and ships

The Cornish Copper Company arrived in 1758, and John Harvey founded his foundry in 1779. Harvey's beam engines were exported around the world to pump the mines, and the quays behind them shipped ore, coal and timber. The harbour and townscape were included in the World Heritage Site announced in July 2006, a record of what this coast built.

The bay

Across the bay, Godrevy Lighthouse is said to have inspired Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. Whether or not the story holds, the light and the watching have been part of this shore for a long time, and the great flat sands have a way of making visitors understand why.
